On the evening of Thursday 16 October Mrs Janet Bowen, Lord-Lieutenant for Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh, presented Mrs Betsy Walling with the British Empire Medal.

Mrs Walling was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services in arranging the Oral History of Forestry in the Highlands, now a part of Scotland’s National Archive (which also includes a substantial photographic element). Her fluency and familiarity with Gaelic has allowed an added dimension and, directly as a part of her input, Gaelic has been adopted by the Forestry Commission when relevant in stationery, signage and publicity.

She also has provided a single handed support role to the National Forest Land Scheme, which allows communities to buy FC woods. Over 70 communities have explored the scheme, with 38 successful applications being given approval to own and manage their own land, largely due to her help and good judgement.
