Royal visit to Dunvegan

Royal visit to Dunvegan

- 21/07/2014

On 24 July Mrs Janet Bowen, welcomed the Princess Royal to Dunvegan and introduced him to Hugh Macleod, the 30th Chief of the Clan.

HRH Princess Anne opened the John MacLeod of MacLeod Memorial Gazebo in the Walled Garden. Thanks to donations from the Association of Clan MacLeod Societies, this stunning centre piece of the recently replanted gardens was commissioned by Hugh MacLeod, the current Clan Chief, in memory of his father.

John MacLeod accompanied his grandmother, Dame Flora, 28th Clan Chief, who hosted the last Royal visit to the Castle in 1956 when Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Margaret came as part of celebrations of the first ever Clan Parliament.

The Princess also visited the new Royal Exhibition in the recently redecorated North Room, which features original photographs from the press coverage of that first Royal visit, and met some of those who feature in the photographs.

The Royal visit rounded off Clan Parliament week, when MacLeod clansmen from across the globe gather at the Castle, their spiritual home, where the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod have lived for over 800 years
