Helping Heroes

Letter by Lord-Lieutenant Janet Bowen to the Ross-shire Journal of 20 May inviting any member or ex-member of the Armed Forces, especially younger ones, to attend Armed Forces Day, to march past and parade, and, if you have not already received one, to agree to presentation of the Veterans Badge at some suitable time.

- 21/05/2010

Sir - I have been asked by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Sir Jock Stirrup, to help put Armed Forces Day even more on the map.

He writes, "The defence of this country, its people and their interests is fundamental to our wellbeing and prosperity. So those who assume the responsibility for delivering it take on a vital and sometimes daunting challenge. The men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, have consistently risen to that challenge in magnificent fashion, no matter what difficulties they face. Regulars, Reservists and indeed their families, who bear so much on our behalf, have more than earned the nation's gratitude." Last year the day was marked by march pasts and parades in Dingwall and Tain. This year we are being asked for a wider range of community led activities to recognise our sailors, soldiers and airmen.

So, I have two requests: Firstly, could any member or ex-member of the Armed Forces, especially younger ones, not definitely already known to the British Legion please make themselves known to me via June Forsyth, Council Offices, High Street, Dingwall, IV15 9QN, email: ku.vog.dnalhgih|htysrof.enuj#ku.vog.dnalhgih|htysrof.enuj or phone 01349 868 5002. Your contact details will not be passed on to other parties without your specific permission. What we would like to ask you to do is to attend Armed Forces Day, ideally to march past and parade, and, if you have not already received one, to agree to presentation of the Veterans Badge at some suitable time.

Secondly, could any ex serviceman or indeed any member of a community anywhere in Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh, who is prepared to run an event to recognise Armed Forces Day please contact me, once again via June Forsyth.

I fully appreciate that not everyone can muster a parade, but surely anyone, perhaps through their Community Council, can stop to raise the Armed Forces Day flag (we will provide one), and perhaps raise a glass too, and so mark our debt of gratitude. Private ceremonies with say ten or more are quite in order.

The more people who mark Armed Forces Day the better.

Finally, the Armed Forces Day flag will be raised at a short ceremony outside the Council Offices Dingwall at 10.30am on Monday, June 21, there will be a parade and march past in Dingwall on Saturday, June 26 hosted by the British Legion (further details will be announced) and a Help the Heroes March Past and Parade in Tain on Saturday, June 19 (once again further details are available).
