FRIENDS and family of a Ross-shire woman celebrating a very special birthday came from far and wide to mark the milestone with her this week.

Celebrating her 100th birthday was Mrs Jessie MacKenzie who for more than 40 years ran the post office at Knockfarrel.

Jessie was joined by family, friends and fellow residents at the Ballifeary House residential home in Inverness, where she has stayed happily for the past year and a half. Prior to moving there, she lived alone at Knockfarrel, which had been her home for some 86 years.

As a schoolgirl she would walk to school at Fodderty Primary from her home at Raven's Rock near Achterneed.

Celebrating with her on Tuesday this week were her son, Neil and daughters Margaret and Annabel. Also sharing the special day were most of her six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren - including a contingent from San Diego in the United States. Neil's youngest son, Timothy, accompanied by his wife and three children, visit the area every second year around Christmas and, happily, were able to make it across from the States for the big day.

Jessie's daughter Margaret, who lives in Conon Bridge, said her mother had greatly enjoyed the day, during which she received a card of congratulations from the Queen, brought in person by Lord Lieutenant, Janet Bowen. Her former minister, the Rev Jim Abernethy and Rev Angus MacRae from Dingwall, also attended.
