Strathpeffer Street Party

- 07/06/2012

Mrs Bowen, Lord Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh, attended the Strathpeffer Street Party and received 'the Queen' on behalf of the community (of which Mrs Bowen is a member).

The day was the culmination of much planning and blessed with fine weather. The consequence was a large turnout, with attendees converging on the Pavilion Band Stand from three different directions, each being led by a piper.

Free tea, coffee and ice creams helped events along.

Mrs Bowen had wisely delegated the judging of the cake competition to Lady Cromartie and Lady Macdonald, and the judging of the best representation of the Queen on a paper plate by all classes of Strathpeffer primary School to Mrs Val Moffat. The entries were a joy to behold and some are pictured in the attached picture galleries.

The 'Queen' arrived in a distinctly non regal trailer and was welcomed by Mrs Bowen, and a good time was had by all.

Mrs Bowen has written to the Ross-shire Journal about events such as these as follows:

Dear Sir

May I use your columns to express my admiration and thanks to all those who volunteered in whatever way to make the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations so special in Ross-shire and in Skye. I know that events like these take an enormous amount of hard work.

I have perhaps had an unfair share of the variety of ways people have made these days so special, but from Portree in the west to Tain in the east communities have made the commitment to celebrate the sixty years of service that the Queen has given to us, and have done so in great style.

I have enjoyed massed bands, country dancing, many static displays, cream teas, traditional music, pop music, a number of visits from ‘the Queen’, and the blessing of new colours for the Seaforth Highlanders.

Everywhere I have been met with happiness and a new sense of community and sharing, and a frequently expressed desire ‘to do this again’. So, we must!

But perhaps the most poignant moments have been at church services where the true essence of the Queen has been spoken of in a variety of ways. Truly we have much to be grateful for, and much to celebrate. The Queen has said that we should look to the future with clear heads and warm hearts, and from all I can see Ross-shire and Skye are doing just that.

Yours sincerely,

Janet Bowen
Lord Lieutenant
