Massed Bands in Portree for the Jubilee

Mrs Janet Bowen, Lord Lieutenant for Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh, escorted by Donald Nicolson and Jerry Smith of the British Legion, took the salute before the massed pipe and drum bands of Isle of Skye, Uist, Lochaber and Scottish Power, in Portree on Saturday 2 June, on the first day of the celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The day was favoured with brilliant sunshine, and a great turnout.

Senior Drum Major Peter MacDonald and Senior Pipe Major Alan MacKenzie led the Isle of Skye drummers and pipers.

Pipe Major Colin Gordon led the Uist pipers and Pipe Major Moira Robertson (from Portree) led the Lochaber pipers.

Dancers came from Dannsaran an t-Eilean Sgaitheanach under the instruction of Mrs Karen Campbell.

The Army Cadet Force were under the command of Jamie Johnston.

And finally, but by no means least, the Scottish International Drum Major Display Team under the direction of Drum Major Billy Jordan of the Scottish Powe Pipe Band, accompanied by brothers Liam and Kevin Renton, together with eight year old Rowan Murdoch from Alexandria from Campbelton, displayed marching and mace throwing skills.

At the Camanachd Square there were displays of piping, dancing, and drumming, whilst in the static area there were sales, exhibitions of old cars and much else. Jubilee decorated cream teas were on sale in the hall.

But the highlight of the day was the march down to the Square and the salute. The photos in the gallery show the story.
