Lord Lieutenant and Ulla

Lord Lieutenant and Ulla

- 31/05/2012

When the Lieutenancy of Ross and Cromarty was asked to send a boat to the Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames to be held on Sunday 3 June, it was immediately clear that the area with its strong maritime links should send a strong delegation.

The original plan was to send the Nigg ferry, but contractual problems (the ferry would have to be away for several days) and finally the ferry's height (it wouldn't fit under the bridges at high tide) put an end to that. But in the meantime a better solution was developing, and on Thursday, Mrs Bowen, Lord Lieutenant, waved off Ulla, a girl powered (but man made) skiff from Ullapool.

The picture shows Ulla, with Caberfeidh at the bows and clear identification on the side, with saltires on the oars, all so that the Queen may clearly recognise her in the throng, on her trolley about to depart.

Carriage of Ulla to London (and back!) is in the safe hands of Fraser Hutchinson and his crew.

Deputy Lieutenant Donald Kennedy who has masterminded the project will greet the boat and crew in London and is charged with a proper photographic record, so watch this space!
