Russian Arctic Convoy Week at Aultbea 7 to 12 May

Enigma Lecture

- 13/05/2012

Lord Lieutenant Mrs Janet Bowen had the pleasure of attending two events during the Russian Arctic Convoy Week at Aultbea.

On Saturday 12 May she attended the lecture on Enigma at the Aultbea Community Hall and spoke in warm recognition of all that had been achieved in recognising the part that the veterans of the convoys and the area of Loch Ewe had played. She also spoke of the close interest of Prince Michael of Kent and undertook to report back to him the progress that had been made.

Her speech was followed by talk on the part of the RAF in the Russian Arctic Convoys. The convoys had carried a large number of hurricane aircraft to Murmansk and Archangel, together with pilots and aircrew to fight the Germans and to train Russians to operate the aircraft. Further reports on this can be found at http://russianarcticconvoymuseum.co.uk/index.html. The speaker, Air Commodore Phil Wilkinson, as it happens, on other business, had spoken to Prince Michael earlier in the week, and carried his personal message of encouragement and support.

The main business of the meeting was a talk on the Enigma Coding Machine.
