HMS Grimsby at Kyle of Lochalsh

HMS Grimsby at Kyle of Lochalsh

- 22/04/2018

On 21 April Mrs Janet Bowen travelled to the Kyle of Lochalsh to accept an invitation to dinner on HMS Grimsby.

Mrs Bowen was received by the captain, Lt Cmdr Luxford and provided with a briefing on the ship's work.

This occasion gave an opportunity to meet with representatives of the local community and the Royal Navy to begin planning for the commemoration of the sinking of HMY Iolaire on 31 January 2018. This disaster could scarcely be more tragic. Survivors of the Great War, travelling back to Lewis for Hogmanay, left the train at Kyle and boarded the Iolaire for Stornaway, sinking just outside the harbour with 205 lives lost.
