On Friday 3 June Mrs Janet Bowen, Lord-Lieutenant for Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh presented Mrs Etta Brown with the British Empire Medal.

Mrs Bowen, in her speech of welcome said:

Henrietta Brown’s unassuming and unrelenting commitment over many years to the Town of Tain and the surrounding communities’ good causes makes her outstanding.

I personally know Netta from her loyal support of Red Cross in Tain over many years. She was a major part of a strong team working away raising money, carrying out First Aid and running the shop.

But the Red Cross was just one of many charities she has supported over the years, Tain Gala Association and Arthritis Care - and many others.
Someone said: “Netta can be seen spending many an hour rattling a tin in the street”

She was awarded the Royal Burgh of Tain Jubilee Award in 2002.

She was given Honorary Membership of the Local Branch of SWRI in recognition of her years of support and active membership, in fact her contributions to the Handicrafts shows often won prizes!

The other major contribution that Netta has made to the disadvantaged people of all ages across Scotland through the Queen Mother’s Clothing Guild, of which she was President and group leader, was organising volunteer knitters, all over including the Tain area, to provide knitted clothing and goods during winter to the Aberdeen Cyrenians. She probably does not know what a difference she has made to others, but the Aberdeen Cyrenians view her as a true heroine.
