On Friday 20 May Mrs Janet Bowen, Lord-Lieutenant for Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh presented Mrs Calina Macdonald with the British Empire Medal.

Prior to making the award Mrs Bowen said:

I have heard so many lovely things about you and all your activities here on Skye its very difficult to give more than a tiny birds eye view of all you have achieved.

The first comment I heard was how well deserved this honour is because anything Calina agrees to do and take on she does way beyond and above what is necessary! Nothing is too much trouble.

Calina is highly regarded as a local horticultural expert. She is a great encourager of others to make the best use of their gardens in growing produce for supplying the local market. She was the founder member of Skye Food Company contributing her jams, jellies and chutneys often using the traditional skills taught to her by her mother, aunts and grandmother using the very best Skye produced ingredients and learned skills.

Calina has won many awards, produced books and regularly been involved in TV programmes on BBC 2 and BBC Alba and others. She has produced booklets on various aspects of growing good produce and Marketing.

Then recently she branched out into trying to mitigate against the increasing price of fuel oil in Skye and through innovative planning was able to reduce the cost locally.

All these and many other activities Calina does entirely voluntarily ,and continues to do so for the betterment of her community this community.
